The NHL always has a tall task to decide the best schedule for every team during the offseason and now it looks like the Leafs are getting the short end of the stick.

When the NHL always changing the schedule each year, in an effort to find more balance, sometimes things fall through the cracks and one team gets a brutal stretch of the year, like the Toronto Maple Leafs have right now.

In December there are 28 days where hockey is being played, the Maple Leafs have games during 15 of those days including four separate stretches where they play three games in four nights. Clearly, their schedule is quite condensed.

When teams play in the second half of a back-to-back, they tend to be much more sluggish and often have a terrible record during those games.

This month alone, the Leafs they have a 2-2-0 record in the first half of back-to-backs and they have a 1-3-0 record in the second half. Given their record, this is quite concerning.

Now, concerns about how Washington is seemingly favorited versus the Leafs in these back-to-backs have been raised.

Heading into January, the Leafs will only play one back-to-back but will also play 13 games throughout the month. However, 8 of these games will be played at home which will be a massive help to the players who have been busy this season.

While the NHL schedule will never be perfect for every team, as some need to travel farther than others, the NHL is doing all it possibly can to have the fairest on-ice product time and time again.

Hopefully in the future, with advancements in technology, the NHL can create the perfect schedule that treats every team fairly and ensures the league offers an equal chance for every team.
