Recently the Detroit Red Wings made a huge coaching change by hiring Todd McLellan and now star forward Patrick Kane has spoken about how the team's mentality has changed.

Earlier this week the Detroit Red Wings made the shocking announcement that they had fired former head coach Derek Lalonde and replaced him with Todd McLellan.

The change comes after GM Steve Yzerman felt the Red Wings were not as close to the Stanley Cup Playoffs as they should be as they are tied for last in the Eastern Conference.

Since making the switch McLellan has spoken to the media and made a passionate speech directed at his players through the media urging them to get back to playing simple hockey and to stop overthinking.

This message from McLellan was noticed by the media and has now made its way to the players with Patrick Kane being asked about how McLellan has changed the team already.

Patrick Kane opens up about new head coach Todd McLellan's unique style

In a new interview, Patrick Kane was asked about the quote from McLellan about getting back to just playing hockey.

Kane admits that this style is something that is always good for a struggling hockey team focusing on effort and making plays instead of being worried about making potential mistakes.

I think he's trying to make the game simple for us, admitted Kane. Where you're just going out there and playing. I think most of the time if you're playing hard and skating hard and maybe if you make a mistake or two, if you're still working then sometimes that covers that up a little bit.

Kane praised his new head coach for trying to keep things simple and just get the players on the ice back in a confident state of mind through simple plays.

I think that's a good way to play too, said Kane. Not thinking too much and you're just playing off of instinct... overall just make the game a little simpler for us.

At the moment the Detroit Red Wings have a long way to go if they are going to get back into the Stanley Cup Playoff race.

Despite the long uphill battle ahead, it seems that Kane and the Red Wings players are optimistic and ready to follow McLellan into battle as they try and climb out of the hole they have dug themselves into
