Timo Meier took out Martin Necas with a dirty hit on Saturday, but after a major penalty and game misconduct, it appears as though he won't face a suspension.
The Carolina Hurricanes and New Jersey Devils did battle for the second night in a row on Saturday, and it's safe to say that to no one's surprise, things got a little chippy between Metropolitan Division rivals.
That all culminated in a hit from Timo Meier, who took out star forward Martin Necas with a knee-on-knee hit, and ultimately, the Devils veteran was handed a major penalty and a game misconduct.
Most however believed that this was an incidental contact with the knee play, as Necas was looking to avoid the shoulder check from Meier, who ultimately ended up making contact with the star forwards knee.
However, the major penalty and game misconduct have some questioning whether or not a suspension will follow, but now, ESPN's Greg Wyshynski has revealed that no further discipline will come to the veteran after this play.
This is a huge break for New Jersey, as they now won't miss a key part of their lineup for any time at all, and with Carolina's Necas not even missing a shift as a result of the hit, it's safe to say that this was the right call from the NHL's Department of Player Safety.
We've seen much worse hits to the knee even this season in the NHL that didn't result in a suspension, so while the NHL's DoPS comes under major scrutiny, the belief from fans is that they got this one right.
If Necas had been injured on the play and missed the rest of the game, perhaps this would have been different, and as of right now a game misconduct as the only discipline is the correct call, but next time these two teams play, expect this to come up again.
