The Colorado Avalanche have started off this year's trade deadline week with a deal with the New York Rangers for Ryan Lindgren and Jimmy Vesey.

Per top NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the Avalanche will be trading forward Juuso Parssinen, defenseman Calvin De Haan, and draft picks to the New York Rangers in exchange for Jimmy Vesey and Ryan Lindgren.

Ryan Lindgren has had a disappointing season with the New York Rangers, and Jimmy Vesey has not been a great fit this season.

Vesey's been expected to be traded for a few weeks, since he commented in an interview that he had 'lost his purpose' playing for the New York Rangers.

As for Lindgren, who is in his seventh season with the Blueshirts, this trade also seemed to be coming, as the team has not chosen to commit to him on a long-term contract.

This deal is complicated, as both of these teams are very much in the playoff hunt; the Avalanche are near-certainties to make it in the less competitive Western Conference, but this move indicates that the New York Rangers have chosen a path for this year, despite the J.T. Miller trade.

We will see whether the Rangers make any moves this off-season as they attempt to retool on a fly.

UPDATE

The draft compensation in the deal has been revealed to be a second and a fourth rounder. Prospect Hank Kempf from Cornell University will be headed back to Colorado in the trade.

The Rangers will equally be retaining 50% of Lindgren's salary in the transaction.
