The San Jose Sharks visited Ottawa tonight where the ultimately lost by a final score of 5-3.
The Senators maintained their pace in the Eastern Conference wildcard race, picking up two points on the Red Wings and Rangers, who both lost their last game.
The Blue Jackets currently hold the top wild card spot with 68 points while the Red Wings have the second with 66.
With their win tonight, the Senators now have 64 points, just two back of Detroit with a game in hand to boot.
That being said, the result of the game was arguably not the most important thing that happened.
Late in the third period, as the Sharks were attempting a comeback, Sharks forward Tyler Toffoli cross-checked Senators defenseman Jake Sanderson along the boards, sending the blueliner to the ice.
Sharks rookie Will Smith immediately scored on a tic-tac-toe play from William Eklund and Macklin Celebrini.
Senators fans were not happy with the officials after the play, believing that play should have been blown dead for a penalty.
Now, many are even calling for Toffoli to get a suspension for the play, calling for the Department of Player Safety to take an extra look at what happened.
Toffoli leads the sharks with 21 goals this season and has 38 points through 52 games.
Should he get suspended for this play it would be a big blow for the team's struggling offense, but general manager Mike Grier certainly won't mind if it means the team gets another 1st overall selection at the 2025 draft.
