New Hampshire goalie Jared Whale was seriously injured in the Wildcats' 4-1 loss to Boston College on Friday night, leaving the ice on a stretcher after colliding with teammates in the second period.
With just five minutes left in the period, Whale was hit down to the ice in his crease when a teammate fell backward onto him. The impact saw him laid out motionless on the ice, and he was attended to right away by medical staff.
Following several nervous minutes of on-ice treatment, he was rolled carefully onto a stretcher and removed for further observation.
Due to the incident, the officials took the decision to take both teams to the locker room prematurely for intermission. The rest of the time for the second period was played after the intermission, immediately followed by the third.
Rico DiMatteo took over for Whale for the remainder of the game, but top-seeded BC was in control. Two goals by Andre Gasseau helped the Eagles to victory, including a go-ahead tally 29 seconds prior to Whale's injury.
UNH's lone score came in the first period by Robert Cronin. In spite of the gruesome scene, UNH trainers later reported that Whale was able to move his limbs en route to the hospital.
The teams play again on Saturday night in Durham. We would like to take this time to wish Jared the very best during his recovery and we all hope to see him back on the ice very soon.
