After serving a lengthy suspension for his hit on Darnell Nurse, Toronto Maple Leafs forward Ryan Reaves has officially returned, with the team finally allowing him to speak with the media after previously denying the opportunity.
While he didn't fire back at Darnell Nurse after the Oilers veteran showed clear frustration with the play, Reaves did indeed respond to the comments made that he only plays to inflict pain and doesn't play hockey.
Unsurprisingly, Reaves leaned into the comments made by Nurse after his hit, claiming that he's not going to change his play style, although efforts will be made to stay within the rules of the NHL going forward.
Given the way that Reaves has played throughout his career, he certainly wasn't going out there to injure someone on purpose, but when you play with such reckless abandon, sometimes things like this can happen, and criticism will come along with that given how unnecessary it was.
However, no one truly expected anything different from Reaves, as the veteran has been the same person throughout his entire NHL career, and for those who love him, it's what they truly love about him.
Ultimately though, we hope that Reaves doesn't make any more plays like this, as it was ugly viewing for the fans who had to watch Nurse be helped off the ice, so while his game won't change, let's just hope nothing like that happens again.
