In case you missed it, it was a home-ice clunker for the New York Rangers last night, a thoroughly unsatisfying 5-1 loss to their rivals, the New Jersey Devils.
The Rangers did very little to prevent the Devils from their easy win. The Rangers have struggled through the first part of the NHL season to find who they are, and nothing changed in that regard during last night's effort.
Devils linemates Jesper Bratt and Jack Hughes combined for seven points against the Rangers. But what really stirred the pot wasn't the scoring, it was Hughes' flashy backhand deke on a breakaway.
Steve Valiquette, the Rangers' former goalie and current analyst wasn't pleased. He called for retribution against Hughes for having the audacity to pull off the move.
Wait, what? Well, Valiquette's bizarre interpretation quickly became a storyline throughout the night, and Hughes' response was perfect.
But what really made it complete was how the Devils took advantage of the situation to even throw in a lighthearted post-game jab at both the Rangers and Valiquette.
You can't blame Steve Valiquette for feeling that way, after all, he was an NHL goalie himself. However, based on Jack Hughes' stunned reaction during the post-game interview, you can't help but feel there really was no malicious intent on his part.
