The Detroit Red Wings announced Tuesday that right-winger Patrick Kane has been placed on injured reserve retroactive to November 23.
Kane has missed four games with an upper-body injury and remains day-to-day. With him eligible to return at any time, this is mostly a paper move to open up a roster spot.
Not long after placing Kane on IR, the Red Wings utilized the now-open roster spot to recall defenseman William Lagesson from AHL Grand Rapids. The move keeps Detroit's active roster at a maximum of 23 players.
The 2024-25 campaign has been a challenging one for the 36-year-old Kane. In 20 games, he has recorded just three goals and seven assists, tallying 10 points overall.
His struggles mirror a broader issue with the Red Wings' secondary scoring, a factor contributing to the team's current position: one game below .500 and four points out of a playoff spot.
They face a critical test tonight against the Atlantic Division rival Boston Bruins. Kane signed a one-year, $4 million contract with the Red Wings in late June that includes up to $2.5 million in performance bonuses.
He's already secured $1.5 million by suiting up for 10 games, with another $250,000 kicking in at 60 games. The remaining $750,000 is tied to Detroit reaching the playoffs, pegged at just a three percent likelihood by 'The Athletic.'
Lagesson, 28, appeared briefly in the NHL earlier this year, dressing as an injury replacement on November 18 against the San Jose Sharks before being returned the following day without seeing action.
After clearing waivers out of training camp, he's been a reliable performer in Grand Rapids, notching two goals, three assists, and a team-leading +9 mark through 13 games.
However, he has been out since November 24 while serving a three-game suspension for roughing Wild prospect Adam Raska.
With the suspension served, Lagesson is now eligible to play for Grand Rapids at any time the Red Wings opt to send him back down.
