The first moves of the NHL season have been made by the Toronto Maple Leafs as they have sent down 5 players who were on their original training camp roster.

With the NHL season coming up rapidly every NHL team is looking to lock in the 23 players who will make up their opening night roster. Today the Toronto Maple Leafs took the first step towards slimming down their NHL roster by sending Sam McCue, Maxim Muranov, Miroslav Holinka, Marshall Finnie and defenseman Nathan Mayes all back to their junior teams.

Each of these players were extreme long shots to make the Toronto Maple Leafs NHL roster. However, the experience of being around and training with some of the game's biggest stars could be the boost they need to come back next year as true contenders to make the roster.

With these five players sent down, the Toronto Maple Leafs still have 70 players on the training camp roster. This means that throughout the preseason Craig Berube and Brad Treliving will have several more difficult decisions to make.

The Toronto Maple Leafs will begin their preseason tomorrow as they take on the Ottawa Senators. This will be the first look we get at the Maple Leafs and names that could end up being on the opening night roster.

As more moves are made by the Toronto Maple Leafs and other teams around the NHL we will pass them along to you.
