The Vancouver Canucks made a splash when they landed Elias Lindholm from the Calgary Flames ahead of the trade deadline, but the deal hasn't worked out the way that they would have hoped.
Vancouver see no future with Elias Lindholm?
Initially, it was believed that the former Flames and Hurricanes center was set to be a key piece of the Canucks for years to come, but early in his tenure with Vancouver, he has struggled mightily.
In 19 games with his new team, Lindholm has tallied just 3 goals and 7 points with a -5 differential, and these struggles have likely caused any extension talk to be halted immediately.
«Initially when we made the deal, I talked to his camp and said our intention was to sign him,» Allvin said. «But obviously it's got to work for both sides. We'll see. I think it's been a little bit of an adjustment time for him. And in fairness, the whole team hasn't played great, we knew we were going to have a tough February schedule workload-wise, it was heavy and we got out of it with a .500 record which is the reason we're still sitting at the top I think.
«But as I said earlier, we've got guys who haven't played in important games in March.»
Those comments from Patrik Allvin, the Canucks General Manager make it seem as though his future in the NHL lays anywhere else but Vancouver, but given his experience in the playoffs, he still has the opportunity to turn things around. Given the money that he turned down from Calgary this past summer however, it appears that Lindholm and his agent have a very high opinion of him as a player, meaning that ultimately, Vancouver may be priced out of an extension if talks get that far.
Ultimately though, Lindholm hasn't proven to be a very effective player beyond one season alongside Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk in Calgary, and if his struggles continue, it would make perfect sense if Vancouver let him walk into free agency this upcoming summer, regardless of their results in the playoffs.
