The Elias Pettersson trade saga was one of the major NHL storylines this season, even after Vancouver decided to move J.T. Miller first.
Despite acquiring Marcus Pettersson and Drew O'Connor, the speculation around Pettersson did not go away, as many were arguing the Canucks should part ways with their two most controversial stars of 2024-25.
Now, it seems their position has been crystallized. Via Hockey insider Cam Robinson, it would appear that Vancouver has, in fact, pulled Pettersson off the trade market as the Four Nations Face-Off break gets underway.
Of course, there's always a chance their position flips with the March 7 trade deadline weeks away, especially if he continues to struggle. At first glance, though, this appears to be one well-thought-out decision that might just stick.
Since moving on from Miller, Pettersson has collected only two assists in five games, with a season total of 34 points in 49 outings.
The Canucks remain convinced the 26-year-old center has plenty left in his toolbox given that his resume is flush with a 100-point campaign.
No actual trades have been proposed, but considering how Vancouver clings to the last Wild Card in the Western Conference, stability is going to be key.
The mere fact that he is present could be one of the finest things that can happen to the future of the franchise if he can be at his best once the break ends.
