Wes Johnson, a long-time Washington Capitals public address announcer, is getting an outpouring of fan support following a medical issue that saw him hospitalized.
Having become a part of Capitals lore with such famous phrases as "unleash the fury," Johnson has been a fixture in the community for 25 years.
Johnson is in intensive care and in critical condition, but a GoFundMe campaign run for him by friends and family has seen over $137,000 be donated for medical expenses, which doubled its initial $50,000 target.
Fans, touched by his work with and for both the team and community, have been quick to give a nod of approval and say "thanks."
Johnson's incident happened in Atlanta on Jan. 22, when he was scheduled to work a charity function for the National Alzheimer's Association, but failed to make an appearance.
With concerns, his wife, Kim, alerted hospitality workers, and security personnel discovered him unresponsive in a room, with medical professionals having difficulty finding a pulse in him, then rushed him off to a nearby hospital for care.
The Washington Capitals have sent wishes for a speedy recovery and shared a social media post about the current campaign.
This move isn't winning them any social points, as the GoFundMe social media post for Wes has been criticized in a larger narrative.
Many are taking issue with owner Ted Leonsis, worth $3.1 billion, for not providing a payout and instead allowing the public to cover medical expenses through this GoFundMe campaign.
Regardless of all of the backlash, everyone needs to remember the larger issue at hand, and that is the well-being of Wes. We wish him nothing but the best and are keeping his entire family in our thoughts and prayers.
