Utah Hockey Club bypassed "Utah Yeti" and "Yetis" for a name and will have an in-arena fan vote to choose a new one.
The new name and identity will be revealed for its 2025-26 NHL run. That comes in reaction to the rejection of the "Utah Yetis" name, long suspected to have been the eventual chosen one, due to an issue with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
The Delta Center attendees at the next four home games will vote for one of three name options on tablets at a dozen locations in the arena, with an estimated 15,000 takers for each contest.
Utah Hockey Club
Initially a stopgap name for its first campaign following its move from Arizona, it gained traction with its fan base.
Utah Mammoth
One of four runners-up in a fan vote a year ago, including Utah Blizzard, Outlaws, Venom, and Yeti. Owner Ryan Smith recently confirmed it placed in its top four.
Utah Wasatch
One new entrant, and one that supplants "Yeti," with a tip of its hat to a range of mountains with that name. It will permit a Yeti-inspired mascot, a "mountain defender" sort to speak.
The fan base will vote for two logos: one for Utah Mammoth and one for both Utah Hockey Club and Utah Wasatch, both with a mythical snow beast.
Team executive Mike Maughan said additional rounds of voting could follow, but its fan-elected name will go into use beginning in its next campaign
