Despite entering the 2024/25 campaign with Stanley Cup Playoff hopes, the Seattle Kraken have been highly disappointing, with the team sitting several spots back of the Wild Card race in the Western Conference.
Now, they've made a shocking move, as it has been announced that the team are waiving veteran goaltender Philipp Grubauer, who too has been highly disappointing throughout his tenure as a member of the Kraken.
After excelling in Colorado, Grubauer inked a massive six-year, $35.4 million deal in free agency, but in the years he's played with the Kraken thus far, he has struggled, posting a 3.10 GAA and an .890 save percentage through 151 appearances, with rising star Joey Daccord taking over the starting role.
Given that there is still two years remaining on his deal with a $5.9 million annual cap hit, it's highly unlikely that Grubauer will be claimed on waivers, but given his experience, there's always the possibility that a team look at him as a great piece in their goaltending group.
This season, Grubauer is on pace for a career low in save percentage as he has an .866 mark through 21 games thus far, with the team hoping that he can pass through and that perhaps a stint with the AHL's Coachella Valley Firebirds could help him turn things around.
Ultimately though, the 33-year old cashed in on three solid seasons with Colorado, but he simply hasn't lived up to the expectations, and now, it appears his future in the NHL is in doubt as he looks to turn things around and get back to the Kraken in the near future.
