Alex Galchenyuk is a polarizing character in hockey right now. While his talent and skill level are undeniable, his off-ice antics have caused him to have his contract with the Coyotes terminated.
Redemption For Galchenyuk
According to a new report, Galchenyuk might not have to wait long to find a new home in professional hockey. The KHL club Salavat Yulaev and their GM Rinat Bashirov have publicly expressed interest in singing Galchenyuk.
"We informed the agent of our interest. But for now, no more. While he is doing his own thing, we do not know how events will develop. We sort of hung up the call, it will be - we will consider it. There is a budget for this. It is unclear what condition he is in.
It is difficult to judge a person, or a situation, without knowing it completely. Everything can be there. The interpretation of the same police officers may also be different. While it is difficult to judge. Let's see how the person will be ready." - Rinat Bashirov
While this would certainly be a quick turnaround for the former 3rd overall pick, it wouldn't teach him much of a lesson.
NHLPA Assistance Program
Galchenyuk said recently that he was seeking help via the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program, which helps players struggling with addiction. While we applaud Galchenyuk for seeking help, we wonder how his rehab would go if he left North America for Russia.
It would undoubtedly be harder for him to work closely with the NHLPA and would make it easier for him to relapse. We hope that Galchenyuk takes the steps necessary to get better, and hope to see him back on the ice when he's ready.
