The Toronto Maple Leafs are far from perfect and will need to fill in some gaps in their roster if they want to make a run for the Stanley Cup this season. Doing so will require some trades at this point in the season. Surprisingly, the San Jose Sharks are emerging as potential trade partners.
The Sharks are unquestionably terrible and will look to dump their assets in order to rebuild. One of those assets is Tomas Hertl, a 29-year-old who has requested a trade from San Jose.
In this situation, the Leafs actually have some leverage in taking a bad contract off the Sharks' hands. In doing so, they could also land Sharks' defenseman Ty Emberson, a young right-hander who has put up some good numbers with the struggling squad.
A deal like this would have to see the Leafs part ways with Max Domi. Domi has started to find his grove on the Leafs' third line, however, he has yet to score and still looks hesitant in some instances of his game. Getting Hertl in place of Domi would be a big upgrade and add significant depth scoring to the third line.
The Leafs are also in desperate need of a defenseman, so while it might be tough to see Domi let go for sentimental reasons, it could be beneficial to the overall team.
