We are now 6 years in to Auston Matthews career, all spent with the Toronto Maple Leafs who drafted him first overall in 2016. Over the course of 407 games, Matthews had scored 259 goals and 457 points, along with 33 points in 39 playoff games.
Unfortunately so far through Matthews career he has had 0 playoff success, losing every series they have played in, including missing the playoffs after they lost the ''play-in series'' against the Columbus Blue Jackets. In 10 elimination games now, the Toronto Maple Leafs are 0-10 in the Matthews era.
On February 5th 2019, Matthews signed a 5 years $58,195,000 contract with an AAV of $11,640,250, which we are now about to head into year 4 of this 5 year deal. At the end of this contract, Matthews is an Unrestricted Free Agent, which could cause a little concern for the Toronto Maple Leafs and their fans.
Matthews has stated recently that he is staying until he brings a cup to Toronto, but Tavares also told the Islanders that he wanted to stay as well, so we know how that went.
NHL Insider Chris Johnston recently said:
''I can say with 100% certainty, he's not going to play in Arizona''
Many believed that if Matthews was going to leave Toronto, it was to go play for his home town Arizona Coyotes, so if we can believe this insider, Toronto fans have no reason for concern anymore!
