While Kyle Dubas has been adamant that he will either return to Toronto for next season or take some time off to be with his family, very little has leaked regarding his contract status and any potential extension. No contract for Dubas could mean Toronto has already started looking elsewhere for his replacement, and a new report by Chris Johnston seems to confirm that suspicion.
Dubas' departure would likely shake the Leafs to their core, as he is largely responsible for assembling their current roster. If a new general manager comes into Toronto and sees all of these massive contracts that he didn't sign, could he look to blow it all up and rebuild?
Players like Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander, and potentially even John Tavares could all fetch the Leafs massive returns, and would surely accelerate their rebuild faster than any normal rebuild. Toronto could use this opportunity to get younger and give themselves more cap flexibility.
This is, of course, just a hypothetical. Anything can happen, but nothing is certain at this time.
