One of the biggest issues the Washington Capitals have had this season is goaltending. It was the one area they most needed to address at the trade deadline but after being turned down by Marc-Andre Fleury, the goalie pool that was available was pretty slim.

Both Washington Capitals goalies have been below league average this season:

Vitek Vanecek: 2.60 GAA - .910 SV% 20-11-6 record - Vanecek has been the more consistent goaltender but has often played below average and gets bailed out by the Capitals offence.

Ilya Samsonov was supposed to be the teams new number one goalie after letting Braden Holtby walk in free-agency 2 years ago, but has not been able to match his rookie season stats. This season, Samsonov has an awful 3.02 GAA & .896 SV%.

This play was almost identical to one that lost the Capitals an overtime game against the Boston Bruins last year that flipped the series in the Bruins favour.

This is not to take away from the hard work on this play by Casey Cizikas, but what was Samsonov doing on this play? Why was he spinning instead of just getting in position after he messed up his clearing play.
