Recently, a loophole in a KHL contract gave a player a shorter term, and Matvei Michkov might be able to use the same loophole to get to the NHL sooner.

KHL Terminates Sergei Ivanov's Contract and Signs a New 2-Year Deal

Sergei Ivanov was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 5th round, 138th overall. Now, in a surprising move, the KHL has terminated his contract and allowed him to sign a new, 2-year deal.

Per the #KHL, SKA has terminated the contract of #CBJ prospect Sergei Ivanov and he signs a new two-year contract with them which runs till the end of the 2024-25 season.

It was reported earlier that he'll join Admiral on loan.

Could Michkov Do a Similar Move and Get to NHL Sooner?

The move opens up a potential precedent for recent 7th overall draft pick Matvei Michkov. Michkov is under contract with the KHL's SKA St. Petersburg until 2026, however, if he was able to terminate his contract in a similar way, he could sign a 1-year extension and move to the NHL sooner than expected.

Matvei Michkov scores AGAIN, this time against his former KHL team.

He now has 4 goals, 8 points in 8 games with Sochi at age 18. 👀

As seen on Flyers Insider - "Michkov could be heading to Philadelphia soon, according to major news?"
