When the Montreal Canadiens stepped up on the stage of the 2022 NHL Entry draft and chose not to draft star center Shane Wright, instead opting for the Slovakian winger Juraj Slafkovsky, they had a plan in mind.

Two other draft picks went by and Shane Wright was still not taken and Gary Bettman announced a trade had been made. Fans were freaking out thinking they got both Slafkovsky and Shane Wright, but the trade ended up being for a former pick. The Montreal Canadiens traded for 2019 3rd overall pick from the Chicago Blackhawks, Kirby Dach.

Dach is currently a RFA with the Montreal Canadiens, and not much has been said about his contract with the team yet, but what we do know with the Habs is they have -$6,321,666 in cap space right now according to capfriendly.com.

While Dach has not yet reached his potential in the NHL, this is one of those moments that if the Montreal Canadiens locked him up to a long term contract, it could be an absolute steal in the long run, but from the sounds of rumours, they are thinking more short-term.

Elliote Freidman on his 32 thoughts podcast shared the following:

Don't assume three (years), don't assume two, don't assume four. It could be several ideas or concepts around those lines." -

What do you think they should do with Dach, long term or short term?
