The Montreal Canadiens are currently in the midst of a rebuild and that means dumping all older players of value for some assets in return to help with the rebuild.
The 29 year old
Joel Armia went to Montreal in a trade with the Winnipeg Jets back on June 30th 2018, as a ''throw in'' to incentivize the Montreal Canadiens to take on the contract of Steve Mason.
Armia has now been with the Habs for 4 seasons, and back in the 2019-20 season, Armia had his break out season where he scored 16 goals and 30 points in 58 games. Many thought he was finally going to turn into the player that we saw tear up the World Juniors back in 2013 where he scored 6 goals and 6 assists in 6 games, but unfortunately Armia did not follow that up and posted back to back seasons with only 14 points.
While Armia might not have the offensive output that we all hoped he would, he is still a reliable two-way player and his 6'3" 220lb frame is good to battling along the boards and infront of the net.
According to Scouting Review on Twitter, there have been some discussions between the Montreal Canadiens and Calgary Flames for Armia:
«According to information obtained in the last few days, there have been talks between the Flames and the CH to acquire Joel Armia."
Armia has 3 years left on a contract that carries a $3,400,000 cap hit, but if this was a move to say get Lucic off the books of Calgary and save 2 million, the Habs would definitely take it to get rid of Armia's contract as well. Maybe Calgary even sweetens the pot a bit.
