Heading into this season, the management team of the Flyers figured last season was just a fluke. They thought their team was much better than what they put forth last year and thought with a coaching change they would be much better this season.
They brought in head coach John Tortorella to bring a new element to the team and while it started the season off in the right direction, they are now 2-5-3 in their last 10 and sitting second last in the Metro division.
They made small efforts to improve in the offseason like bringing in star offensive defenceman Tony DeAngelo, but the injured players they are missing is still proving to be too much to overcome.
Instead of starting the rebuild this past offseason, they delayed it and it seems like that rebuild is about to start.
One of the current fan favourite players sounds like they will be the first to possibly go:
NHL Insider Larry Brooks, believes that
Kevin Hayes will ''inevitably'' be bought out.
Hayes was benched earlier this season, even after the praise he received from his head coach in the offseason. WIth his currently cap hit of $7,142,857at the age of 30, it is probably very unlikely that someone will want to take on his contract that carries another 4 seasons.
To his credit, he has produced very well this season, scoring 9 goals and 28 points in 29 games, but this has not been enough to help the Flyers win games.
If a rebuild is surely in the Flyers plans and they buy out Hayes this offseason, he will be on the Flyers books for 6 more seasons, but by year 4 it will only be $1,611,111 against the cap, definitely a number they can deal with.
