While his name may not be as familiar in North America, in his home country he was known to every hockey fan around. Dmitri Tarasov, a 17-year veteran of the KHL, died at the young age of 44.
Legend
For the team of Khabarovsk Amur, Tarasov was a legend. He started his pro career there while the team was playing in the Russian Super League, which served as a forerunner of the KHL. After seven years with the team, he would go on to do shorter stints with four others before returning to Amur, this time in the KHL, where he would serve as team captain for five years. Tarasov finished out his pro career there after the 2015-16 season.
Statement
Khabarovsk Amur released a statement confirming Tarasov's death, but gave no indication as to what happened to him.
Translated from Russian: "Yesterday in Khabarovsk, Dmitry Tarasov, a Khabarovsk Amur pupil, the club's leader in the national championships in the number of games played and Russian champion with Salavat Yulaev, died suddenly. He was 44 years old."
In 2021, Tarasov served as an assistant coach with Amurskie Tigry Khabarovsk of the MHL, a Russian junior league.
