Sean Avery Takes Massive Shot at the Leafs and Ryan Reaves.

Controversial Former NHLer Speaks Out

Some people might shy away from being risqué or controversial, but Sean Avery has never been one of those people.

The 43-year-old former NHL pest has made headlines once more for his feisty public statements, this time aimed at the Toronto Maple Leafs and their newly-signed enforcer, Ryan Reaves.

When interviewed on the Leafs Morning Take podcast, Avery boasted that he'd not only make the Leafs roster if given two months to train beforehand, he'd be far better in his role than Reaves would.

"I could make the Leafs. I'm probably in the best shape of my life... I would give that dressing room a run for their money. Could I get my timing in 5 weeks to be ready for training camp? No, but if they knew that I was on the team and it was like 'ok, he needs 8 weeks', then I would be ready and I would be much more effective than Ryan Reaves.»

Though Avery is still in great shape for his age (he actively practices Brazilian jiu jitsu), he last played in the NHL during the 2011-12 season, so it's highly doubtful he'd be as effective as he once was in a league that has become younger and faster in recent years.
