The NHL insider was the first to report the news, telling us that the Canucks have made the deal, moving on from Sprong after just nine games with the team this season. Furthermore, the Canucks effectively gave him away for free, getting nothing but 'future considerations' in return.
Sprong's career with the Canucks was very short, but it did contain at least one good moment. The veteran forward actually scored the team's first goal of the season in the dying seconds of a powerplay against the Calgary Flames. The Canucks would go on to win that game by a final score of 6-5 in overtime, so Sprong's goal was critical.
Since then though, Sprong has only scored just two assists. It is not clear exactly why the move was made, but something must be up as trades this early into the season are very rare. Perhaps Sprong was a bad fit for the locker room which would make sense considering his questionable reputation. Canucks fans themselves appear to be leaning in this direction. One pointed out that he may have clashed with head coach Rich Tocchet, who is known for having a zero funny business tolerance.
We may very well hear from him or a team representative soon to explain why this deal went down, so be sure to stay tuned for updates on this evolving story.
