Tanner Jeannot probably knew the writing was on the wall for some level of discipline following his latest on-ice incident. Now, the NHL's Department of Player Safety has weighed in and handed down a serious punishment following Jeannot's open-ice hit on Vancouver Canucks forward Brock Boeser.
It happened nine minutes into the first period, as Jeannot caught Boeser with a high hit to the chin of the Canucks winger, and he did not return to the game. It was an early focal point of the game and was instantly called one of the dirtiest this 2024-25 NHL regular season has seen. Jeannot took a match penalty on the play, which automatically triggered a review by the NHL's Department of Player Safety.
In that light, the Department of Player Safety has suspended Jeannot, now with the Los Angeles Kings. The match penalty carried a suspension of play pending completion of the review and determination of additional discipline by the League.
It shouldn't be a huge surprise for the fans and analysts either, as Jeannot hit his opponent without any justification. The league has been quite firm in punishing such dangerous plays when injuries are a concern to ensure player safety.
There had not been any word on the condition of Brock Boeser or how many more games he may miss, but he did look pretty shaken up as he left the ice. Time for the Los Angeles Kings to pick up the pieces and move on.
