The Buffalo Sabres and Nashville Predators have been major disappointments this season. Once thought of as playoff contenders, both teams have come out of the gate badly and are now sitting at or near the bottom of the NHL standings.
It would appear unlikely that either will find a postseason berth without major changes. Enter the possibility of a blockbuster trade.
According to Predators insider Marco D'Amico, Nashville has its sights set on Sabres forward Dylan Cozens. However, the team has reportedly stopped short of including star forward Steven Stamkos in any trade discussions.
D'Amico adds that neither Steven Stamkos nor the Predators are pursuing a move at this time. The Nashville club isn't the only one showing interest in Dylan Cozens.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has connected the Vancouver Canucks to a bold trade proposal that would see Cozens and Bowen Byram go to Buffalo in exchange for star center Elias Pettersson.
Cozens and Bowen Byram are fine young talents, but this deal isn't going to happen. Vancouver is in "win-now" mode and may just view the trade as too risky with little immediate payoff.
The Chicago Blackhawks have also emerged as a candidate to land Cozens, and that could be a better fit.
Still, in rebuild mode, the Chicago Blackhawks are trying to load up on younger talent, so pairing Cozens up with a rookie sensation like Connor Bedard could be an exciting and dynamic duo for many years.
For teams like the Sabres, Predators, and Blackhawks, a Cozens trade could be what sets off the shake-up that can help turn their seasons around or shape their futures.
