Last night, a strange action by Calgary Flames goaltender Jacob Markstrom before the team's game confused many fans. Markstrom seemed to indicate the future of his hockey career by how he acted toward the fans.
Markstrom Drops A Major Hint About His Future
During warmups of last night's contest against the San Jose Sharks, Jacob Markstrom caught the attention of fans. He did so by giving out pucks to a significant number of fans throughout warmups.
According to TSN reporter Salim Nadim Valji, this was the first time Markstrom had done something like this in his career. Valji compared this scene to last season when former General Manager Brad Treliving watched the last team practice from the bench.
Just me (!), but the scene w/ Markstrom during the end of warmups tonight reminded me when then-GM Brad Treliving watched the final practice of last season from the bench.
While this does not confirm a move is coming it does turn up the speculation that something is in the works. If something is going to happen it will need to be approved by Markstrom himself before a trade can be made.
Markstrom Speaks On Trade Deadline Speculation
As the speculation has mounted in Calgary for Jacob Markstrom he was asked about the situation. He first said that he does not have control in the situation and it is up to Calgary what happens.
«It's up to Calgary, what they want to do. That's what it comes down to," he told Sportsnet's Eric Francis earlier this week when asked about the possibility of a trade. "I don't control it."
He continues and confirms he has no plans to ask for a trade from the team and enjoys playing for the Flames.
«I'm not going to go up and meet and ask for a trade either. I'm here to play, I'm enjoying every day and we've got a great group.»
Markstrom remains focused on playing as best he can for the Flames. He admits that the conversation will have to change if the Flames come to him and ask him about waiving his no-trade clause.
"No. We'll see," he said. «When they send an email that I've got to sign something to remove my no-move clause, then it's a different conversation we've gotta have."
With all of the speculation continuing to build it will be interesting to see if the Flames do end up moving on from Markstrom. With the Elias Lindholm trade the Flames clearly are comfortable selling off players to restart.
