Through 15 games this season, the Carolina Hurricanes have been one of the best teams in the NHL, posting an impressive 11-4-0 mark in that time as the team sits in second place in the Metropolitan Division.
One of the main reasons for that success thus far has been their goaltending, with their three netminders combining for a 2.67 GAA despite the 5.20 number put up by Spencer Martin.
Unfortunately, Martin is only getting game time due to an injury suffered by Frederik Andersen, and now, Head Coach Rod Brind'Amor has confirmed that the injury is worse than initially expected.
When asked about the week-to-week status given by the team initially, Brind'Amor had this to say:
Without providing much detail, we don't know whether that means Andersen will be out for 1-2 months or the rest of the season, and while the team likely would have stated if it was the latter, it's still a very worrying sign for the 35-year-old.
In four appearances this season, Andersen has been incredible, posting a 3-1-0 mark with a 1.49 GAA and a .941 save percentage, but unfortunately, he just can't stay healthy.
This is a major blow to the Hurricanes, who will now see Martin take plenty of reps in net, with the team now giving the starting role to Pyotr Kochetkov, who himself has been solid, putting together a 2.56 GAA over his 10 starts.
Due to medical issues, Andersen has been limited to just 50 starts over the past two seasons with Carolina, but when healthy, he remains a viable No. 1 with the Hurricanes. Now, the team will be hoping he can get back to 100% at some point this season, because if not, it could derail their lofty Stanley Cup hopes.
