The Carolina Hurricanes are heading into the offseason with several upcoming free agents including forward Jake Guentzel and today an insider has revealed the team is open to trading him.

The Carolina Hurricanes were one of several teams that went all in at the NHL Trade Deadline this season. One of the ways they did this was by trading for a rental player in Jake Guentzel from the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Full trade:
Pittsburgh trades Jake Guentzel (25% retained) and Ty Smith to Carolina in exchange for Michael Bunting, Ville Koivunen, Vasili Ponomarev, Cruz Lucius, Carolina's 1st RD pick in 2024 (Conditional) and Carolina's 5th RD pick in 2024 (Conditional).

The season did not end the way many in Carolina were hoping as they lost to the New York Rangers in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Now with Jake Guentzel set to be a free agent, the Hurricanes are looking to get any last value out of him that they can. A new report has indicated that the Carolina Hurricanes are open to trading the contract rights to Jake Guentzel for a mid-round pick.

On Jake Guentzel: Elliotte says "It sounds like he is available for a mid round pick." #CauseChaos #NHL

This would allow the team trading for Jake Guentzel to get exclusive negotiating rights with him before free agency. The trade could also be done similar to Matthew Tkachuk where it was a sign and trade extending the player as part of the trade.

At the moment these negotiations are in the early stages and no deal is imminent. As the rumors pick up and potential suitors become known we will continue to update this situation.
