Insider Pierre LeBrun shares an update on Jake Guentzel
NHL insider Pierre LeBrun has shared the latest update on Carolina Hurricanes star Jake Guentzel and what is likely to happen with him ahead of free agency.
Earlier this year the Pittsburgh Penguins traded Jake Guentzel to the Carolina Hurricanes for a massive haul that included picks, prospects, and Michael Bunting.
Done deal!
The #Canes have acquired forward Jake Guentzel and defenseman Ty Smith from the Penguins in exchange for forwards Michael Bunting, Ville Koivunen, Cruz Lucius and Vasily Ponomarev, as well as two conditional 2024 picks.
Pittsburgh retains 25% of Guentzel's salary. After a playoff run where Guentzel scored nine points in 11 games that ended in the second round, his future in Carolina became uncertain with him possibly leaving in free agency for another destination.
Insider Pierre LeBrun has reported the following:
My understanding is that the Hurricanes wasted no time in reaching out to Guentzel's camp to talk possible extension and that there have already been a number of conversations. The interest is mutual, Guentzel enjoyed his time in Carolina after the trade from the Pittsburgh Penguins.
It is now up to Carolina Hurricanes interim GM Eric Tulsky to resign Guentzel and see if he can continue to develop chemistry with Sebastian Aho among others.
More details to come.
