There is a contract offer from the Canes on the table, but the latest word from TSN and The Athletic insider Pierre LeBrun is that Mikko Rantanen will indeed be on the move before the trade deadline passes.
According to LeBrun, Rantanen has told the Carolina Hurricanes that he won't be signing their offer. The Canes can trade him, or keep him for the remainder of the season, at which point he becomes an unrestricted free agent.
There is plenty of speculation on where Rantanen might end up, with many believing the Florida Panthers will make an attempt to land the 28 year old to add to their already already formidable roster.
Rantanen's time with the Hurricanes has seen a drop in his usual production, as he has 2 goals and 6 points in 12 games with the team. However, a fresh start could put him back to his usual torrid scoring pace.
