Blackhawks GM Shocks Fans By Revealing Connor Bedard's Biggest Weakness
Connor Bedard is expected to be one of the great players to play in the NHL, however, his GM Kyle Davidson revealed to the media his biggest flaw.
The Chicago Blackhawks struck gold in the 2023 Draft when they selected Connor Bedard as number one overall. So far, he's lived up to expectations.
There's been a knock on his season in 2024-25 that it was a sluggish start, but at age 19, he's been able to post 16 goals and 49 points in 55 games, that's a great total considering he's playing on one of the league's weakest rosters.
Bedard needs to improve his faceoff percentage
He's without question the cornerstone of the team's future. That said, Bedard's not without his deficiencies. Defensive play needs to be improved, and General Manager Kyle Davidson just touched on one of his primary areas of improvement: faceoffs.
Again, you look at some of the top faceoff men in the league and a lot of them are veteran players. It's a skill that's learned especially over time and and experience. Do people come in and take faceoffs here and there? Yeah, but I don't think that's necessarily out of the norm for a lot of other teams with either younger players or players that are still working on their craft. It's something that I know he's put work into after practice and he will continue to do so. As he gains experience in the league, I think we'll see that improve.
- Kyle Davidson
Bedard's struggled at the dot, and though improvement's been incremental over his first 18 months in the NHL, Davidson says his work ethic is unrelenting in his efforts to get better. Whether Bedard's a Sidney Crosby or a Connor McDavid is to be seen.
He's got the tools to be one of the upper echelons of players in the NHL, but with a rebuilding Blackhawks team and areas to be refined, his path to getting there won't be a speedy one.
