After leaving the Carolina Hurricanes organization, GM Don Waddell is in for a very different situation. As opposed to competing for a Stanley Cup in Carolina, he will be looking to rebuild Columbus from the very bottom into a Stanley Cup contender.
One of the more difficult tasks for Waddell this offseason will be to offload goaltender Elvis Merzlikins as he has greatly underperformed his contract. In a recent interview, Waddell got blunt about how difficult it will be to offload Merzlikins.
Last year Merzlikins played in 41 games posting a 3.45 GAA and a .897 save percentage. Merzlikins has three more years of his current contract which carries a cap hit of $5.4 million per year.
Waddell also mentioned how he is against potentially buying Merzlikins out as an option as it would strap the Blue Jackets for cap till 2030. As it stands, it is quite the predicament for the Blue Jackets but if they can make something happen, they will look to pull the trigger.
