Confirming the loss of one of their star forwards for tonight, according to Detroit Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde, Patrick Kane will not play.
In a surprise, Lalonde said on Monday that Patrick Kane will not play in tonight's game against the New York Islanders due to an injury.
That news came one day after Kane did not show up to practice on Sunday, which at the time was termed a "maintenance day." Now, it seems more serious and could require more time to recover, per Lalonde himself.
Lalonde said Kane would need "another day" to get over it, but wouldn't put a timeline on it, declaring him "day-to-day."
That makes it uncertain how many games Kane might miss, but it would indicate the team doesn't expect him out for the long term.
Kane, on a one-year deal carrying a $4 million average annual value and cap hit, has been an utter disaster thus far into this season compared to the first year in Detroit.
These struggles have led many people to start throwing Kane's name around in trade rumors. If the Wings continue to struggle and Kane fails to produce, that could be a real possibility.
In all of last season, he recorded 20 goals and 27 assists for 47 points in 50 games played, almost at a point-per-game clip. So far this season, though, he has scored just three goals and seven assists for 10 points in the first 20 games of the season.
