The Edmonton Oilers start training camp on Wednesday but it didn't take long for controversy regarding one of the forwards to arise.
Early in the summer, Oilers president Jeff Jackson mentioned that Evander Kane was working his way back from an injury to his hip. Since then, Kane and the team have been exploring his options to try to figure out exactly what his future in Edmonton looks like. It has been rumored for months that the Oilers will be looking at the option of trading Kane to clean up some cap space. He has two years left on his deal at $5.125 million AAV, so moving him would help the Oilers' salary cap situation. Another possibility on the table for them is going the LTIR route prior to the commencement of the 2024-25 season.
Evander Kane does have a full no-movement clause, but on February 28, that becomes a 15-team no-trade list. Journalist Jim Matheson did explain why Kane waited until now to have the surgery, as opposed to having done it during the dog days of summer.
Matheson theorizes that Kane may well have delayed surgery simply because he didn't want to ruin his vacation, at least make it any worse than he has so far, with all of the drama surrounding him.
Putting Evander Kane on LTIR is probably the best thing the Oilers could do in their favor, but in no way will it resolve any outstanding issues he may well have with his attitude.
