The Chicago Black Hawks were expected to name Connor Bedard their next captain, but now, they've made a shocking announcement that has fans stunned.

Despite being just 18-years old, the expectation around the National Hockey League was that rookie sensation Connor Bedard was in line to become the next Chicago Blackhawks captain. On Wednesday, the team shocked the hockey world however, as they would officially name Nick Foligno as their new captain, opting for the veteran rather than taking the route that Edmonton and Pittsburgh did with Connor McDavid and Sidney Crosby.

Foligno becomes the 35th captain in the history of the storied franchise, becoming the first to don the 'C' in Chicago since Jonathan Toews led the way for 14 seasons. Some may question the decision, but experience is needed in such a key role, and given how many players in Chicago look to Foligno for leadership, it's not the worst decision.

Foligno's contract in Chicago runs for a further two seasons, and will take him to the age of 38, where Bedard will likely take over as captain when he hits 21, so for now, it appears to be the right call for the future of the Blackhawks organization, even if fans disagree with it.
