Since falling short in the Stanley Cup Finals the focus for the Edmonton Oilers has been on the future. First hiring Jeff Jackson as the new General Manager and then working on the roster. One of the biggest priorities according to sources has been the future of Leon Draisaitl.
Heading into the 2024-25 NHL season Leon Draisaitl is officially in the final year of his contract. In an interview at the end of the season, Leon Draisaitl confirmed he loves being an Oiler and would like to be back.
Despite making this declaration weeks ago a contract extension has not been agreed to. This has caused major speculation and rumors regarding a potential trade involving Leon Drasaitl.
After hearing these rumors spread for weeks NHL insider Chris Johnston decided to chime in. He specifically answered rumors that the San Jose Sharks were trying to acquire the German star and turned down that possibility.
Despite shutting down these rumors around the San Jose Sharks Chris Johnston did still leave things open-ended. It seems as though the San Jose Sharks are out of the running for Leon Draisaitl but the idea of a trade has not been completely denied.
As the offseason continues this will be a situation to keep an eye on. The longer that the Edmonton Oilers and Leon Draisaitl fail to come together on a contract the more likely a trade could become.
