Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway of the Oilers remain unsigned, and they could now be receiving offer sheets from other NHL teams this summer.

As we now enter the second month of the National Hockey League's (NHL) free agency period, one team that everyone is watching is the defending Western Conference champions, the Edmonton Oilers.

PuckPedia reports that the Edmonton Oilers are currently over the salary cap by $354,167 and still need to sign two of their restricted free agents. The two players who remain unsigned are forward Dylan Holloway and defenceman Philip Broberg.

Due to Edmonton's current cap situation, Brian La Rose of Pro Hockey Rumours, believes that Holloway and Broberg could be the main targets of an offer sheet by other NHL teams before the next season begins.

"While offer sheets are few and far between in the NHL, all it takes is one team that decides to try to disrupt things and sign a player on a cap-strapped team to an offer sheet to change things. Looking at who is left, Edmonton is a team that would find themselves in a tough spot if one of their restricted free agents, defenseman Philip Broberg and forward Dylan Holloway, were to eventually sign an offer sheet with another team." La Rose said.

Broberg and Holloway are two players that offer sheets make the most sense coming from other clubs. The reason for this is that Holloway is still looking to play in the National Hockey League on a full-time basis next season, and proved he was able to during the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, appearing in all 25 of the Oilers games as they lost to the Florida Panthers in game 7 of the Final. He just isn't getting the ice time in Edmonton so a change may do him some good.

On to Philip Broberg, his development has been a lot slower than many experts predicted when the Oilers selected him eighth overall back at the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. Despite this, Broberg had a career year in the American Hockey League (AHL) with Bakersfield, as he collected 38 points in 49 games. He also got to play in 10 games for the Oilers during the most recent Stanley Cup Playoffs.

New Oilers GM Stan Bowman would be put in a very tough spot if he were to receive an offer sheet by any of the other NHL teams. Bowman would either have to match the offer sheet, which would cause the team to fall even more over the cap, or let the player sign with their new team and accept whatever the compensation would be, depending on the yearly salary of the contract.

People will keep a close eye on whether any team around the NHL is willing to take on the risk of offer sheeting either Dylan Holloway or Philip Broberg. It will also be interesting to watch how Stan Bowman will be able to get the team back under the cap, while also signing these two players by the time opening night occurs in October.
