Sportsnet's Mark Spector says Edmonton Oilers left wing Evander Kane will undergo surgery within the next 10 days for a sports hernia. Kane played through the injury last season.
It isn't clear exactly how much time he will miss, but Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported in August it could be an extended absence.
In all, Kane collected 24 goals and 20 assists in 77 games last season. He added eight points in 20 playoff games for the Oilers.
He's still 33 years young and has two years left on his deal with a $5.125-million cap hit, but If he's put on long-term injured reserve, his salary won't count against the cap while he's out. As things currently sit, Edmonton has just under $1 million in cap space with 22 players on their roster, including Kane.
The Oilers do have decent depth at wing, however, with offseason signings like Jeff Skinner and Viktor Arvidsson, that should be enough to cover reasonably well for Evander Kane's potential absence.
