Toronto Maple Leafs get embarrassed by the Montreal Canadiens after latest poll

The Toronto Maple Leafs may be considered the biggest market in the NHL, but that certainly doesn't mean they're the most popular team in Canada.
Despite the lack of Stanley Cup success in Canada over the past 30 years, hockey remains the unrivaled No. 1 sport, and with seven NHL teams in the country as well as countless other teams in other leagues, there's plenty to watch. In Toronto, many believe that because of the market, the Maple Leafs are the biggest team in the country, but that may not be the case after all.
Once again, 338 Canada has conducted a poll that determines the most popular NHL team in Canada, and while Toronto come in with a respectable 20% of the votes, they've been outdone by the Montreal Canadiens, who come in with 23% of the popular vote.
Given the history and success of both organizations, it's certainly understandable that they are the two most popular teams in the country, and while it may have come down to just a few votes, it's the Canadiens that are crowned Canada's most popular team. Beyond these two teams, it was the Edmonton Oilers coming in at third with 12% of the votes, while the Canucks followed with 9%, the Flames, and Jets tied at 7% while the nation's capital seemingly hosts the least popular team in the nation at 5%.
While those seem like low numbers, there's still a great following for each and every team in Canada, and while the Stanley Cup drought now hits 31 years as the NHL continues to grow in the United States, the support for these teams will be unrivaled as all seven look to become the team that ends Canada's misery.
