The hockey game between the Utica Comets and Laval Rocket last Friday in Quebec took a tense and frightful turn late in the third period. With less than six minutes remaining, the play was stopped after what appeared to be a serious injury to one of the players of Utica. This is when Swedish forward Filip Engaras was gunning down the right side of the ice, trying to make a sharp cut toward the net.
As Engaras was circling to the bottom of the right circle, he was drilled to the ice by former Comets defenseman Zack Hayes. The force of the contact sent Engaras spinning out of control, slamming awkwardly into the backboards with the left side of his body. His left shoulder and the side of his head took the brunt of the impact as he ended up lying on the ice completely still. The live broadcast quickly cut away, which only heightened the tension for those watching at home.
It wasn't long before Jason Shaya, the play-by-play announcer of the Comets, expressed alarm. The scene was serious, with medical personnel rushing onto the ice with a stretcher as if fearing the worst, but within minutes, Shaya could reassure his viewers that Engaras had been alert as he was helped off the ice. Though it was a heavy hit, at least the fact that Engaras was conscious did provide some solace in what was otherwise a very nervous moment.
The following morning, the Comets General Manager Dan MacKinnon gave an update to confirm that Engaras had been checked for major head and neck injuries. Fortunately, he did not have any, and he was also released on Saturday. A fortunate recovery, yet a very dramatic reminder of the physical dangers the hockey players often go through regularly.
Despite the scare, Filip Engaras had scored his first of the season earlier in the game, putting some hope for the Comets as they had trailed 3-0. Justin Dowling added a late power-play goal, but wasn't enough to finish the comeback as the Comets lost 4-3. Their struggles continued the next night where they also lost to Laval 4-3 which has given them a tough start to the season with an unflattering winless record of 0-6-0-0.
