I have heard a multitude of wild stories over the years that have come out of the NHL, most of which don't sound remotely realistic. Sometimes these stories just sound so ridiculous, that I don't believe them for a second. It's usually pretty easy to tell if a fellow is embellishing on the truth. However, now and then, a story comes along that's so bizarre yet believable that it leaves no room for doubt.
This next wild one involves none other than Brent Burns of the Carolina Hurricanes. If you know anything about him, you know the man operates on his wavelength. So when I heard what he did for his Carolina Hurricanes teammates after their travel plans had gone sideways, I knew it had to be true.
Here's what went down: A flight cancellation over the weekend stranded the Hurricanes players and, more importantly, left them hungry. With no in-flight options, they were at the travel gods' mercy. Cue Burnsie. Never one to let his teammates go hungry, he took matters into his own hands. He opted to get 100 McDonald's cheeseburgers, yes, 100, to feed the squad.
The catch? McDonald's Drive-Thru wasn't exactly walk-up friendly at that hour. But Burns, ever the problem solver, wasn't about to be deterred. Instead of giving up, he knocked on a stranger's car window, well after midnight, and asked if they could drive him through the lane so he could place the massive order. That he pulled it off is classic Burns.
With Brent Burns, this story rings true: the man is a living legend, and this is another chapter in his book of larger-than-life moments.
