Former infamous Ranger publicly states that he wants to replace Peter Laviolette as head coach
Sean Avery, who played for the Rangers between 2006 and 2012, has officially 'thrown his hat in the ring' to replace Peter Laviolette.
Sean Avery was a beloved figure for the New York Rangers. He had two stints with the team, including the final four years of his playing career, which ended in 2012.
He has remained in New York City since then and is an avid Rangers fan so naturally he's not happy with the way things have gone this season.
Unlike your typical fan, Avery believes he is in a position to do something about it and that is exactly what it seems like he's trying to do.
He just revealed that he has been in communication with Rangers GM Chris Drury about possibly taking over as head coach, and has even put together his own team which includes Blues assistant coach Steve Ott.
"I have put my name in the hat officially for the head coach position of the New York Rangers. I have my staff already contacted. We've worked out everything, responsibilities... I'm actually thinking about having a co-head coach with Steve Ott."
It would certainly be pretty wild if the Rangers replaced Laviolette with Avery, but a move of that magnitude is almost expected at this point.
In fact, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has gone on the record saying that he believes the Rangers still have another move to make, and this one could be the most impactful.
"I think overall, they're looking to take a big swing at something, a very big swing. And, you know, one of the shocking things is that it looks almost impossible for them to get into the playoffs through their division."
Could he be hinting at a coaching change with this comment? Perhaps. One might think that this is signaling a bigger move, but it is hard to say.
Perhaps making a change behind the bench will be just part of a larger organizational move.
Maybe both Laviolette and Drury could lose their jobs at the same time, and who knowns, maybe Sean Avery does have a role to play with this team in the near future. We'll just have to see what happens.
