Famously, Igor Shesterkin has been trying to get a goalie goal for years now, and last year, he attempted it many times but has still fallen short, with Minnesota's Filip Gustavsson already accomplishing the feat in 2024/25.
That may have seemingly motivated the Russian star, as he continues to try his best at making NHL history, but on Thursday against the San Jose Sharks, it was rookie Macklin Celebrini that interrupted his chance at doing so.
When asked for his comments on the play, Shesterkin had this hilarious response for the Sharks standout rookie and 2024 No. 1 overall draft pick:
At just 18 years of age, most people would still be in school at Celebrini's age, but given the immense talent and experience that the BC native has accrued over the years, he was good enough to follow Connor Bedard's footsteps and make the immediate jump to the NHL as the top draft pick.
When Shesterkin's career is all said and done, it could be the play from Celebrini that stops him from becoming one of just a few goalies in NHL history to record a goal. Thankfully for the Rangers, the former Vezina Trophy winner is great at goaltending, as he has a career .921 save percentage and 2.44 GAA through 225 career appearances, putting him on track to be among the all-time greats.
We will see if Celebrini has anything to say to Shesterkin after he was called out in good fun, but regardless, expect this to come up when these teams do battle again later in the season.
