Ottawa Senators Eyeing Erik Karlsson Reunion, According to Sportsnet Analyst
The Ottawa Senators could be looking to get Erik Karlsson on the trade market, according to Sportsnet analyst Nick Kypreos.
With the latest reports confirming the Pittsburgh Penguins are willing to listen to trade offers for veteran defenseman Erik Karlsson, many analysts are suggesting which team could be on the other side of a potential deal involving him.
The Penguins remain out of the playoff picture going into the 4-Nations Face-Off break, and they'll need to make a big push if they want to qualify this season.
If Kyle Dubas, the Penguins' President of Hockey Operations, has the opportunity to bolster his team before the trade deadline, he'll do it.
Karlsson has been having issues on the ice this season, and trading him for younger players willing to prove themselves could be beneficial for the team's immediate success.
Teams in playoff contention could use a guy like him, and according to Nick Kypreos, the Ottawa Senators could be among those teams.
Kypreos highlighted the financial commitment that the Sens would have to make with such a move and talked about what they would need to send to Pittsburgh to land him.
Here's what Kypreos wrote:
"Ottawa as a potential landing spot is intriguing. They're looking to add another top-four defenceman, and there's some thought of bringing him home again. But it would take a big financial commitment by ownership to do it and management's belief that he won't disrupt the growing chemistry led by Jake Sanderson. If those hurdles clear, the Sens would have to make the deal and retention worthwhile for the Penguins, who are seeking young and controllable assets." As of now, the Senators are in the playoff picture, holding the first wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.
Karlsson, the former Senators' captain, could play an important role in helping a team that doesn't have much playoff experience.
