The honeymoon between the Red Wings and Vladimir Tarasenko is over, or perhaps never really started, as it hasn't worked out for him there and he could be traded.

It seems Vladimir Tarasenko's tenure in Detroit could be coming to an unexpected end.

On Saturday night, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman had a surprise update on some of the trade talks across the league with the Four Nations Face-Off approaching.

Friedman reported things between Tarasenko and the Red Wings are seemingly deteriorating faster than anyone expected.

"This one is a little bit of a surprise," said Friedman on Hockey Night in Canada. "I've heard there's been some noise around him."

"I know there's been some conversation around him and we will see how it all develops," added Friedman.

This is all pretty surprising since Tarasenko is only in the first year of a two-year deal with Detroit and has a full no-trade clause for this season.

Tarasenko only has 22 points in 53 games

However, his offensive production has been underwhelming, with just seven goals and 15 assists for 22 points in 53 games, which could be prompting both sides to consider moving on.

His contract carries an annual cap hit of $4.75 million, so that financial factor puts some serious hurdles on any teams wanting to get involved in a potential trade for Tarasenko ahead of the season's end.

With less than four weeks to go until the trade deadline, and with the two week break in effect after today's two games, Tarasenko's situation could likely be dealt with fairly quickly.
