The NHL season is off to a wild start, with the pre-season producing many physical moments that have the league talking, and unsurprisingly, the latest one involves Montreal's Arber Xhekaj. During their pre-season tilt with the Ottawa Senators, Xhekaj took revenge for Ridly Greig's earlier hit and went after Tim Stutzle in a manner that looked highly illegal and on point for the young defenseman.
On another viewing in slow motion though, it appears that Stutzle exaggerated the contact, and while Xhekaj was indeed looking to do damage, it wasn't as bad as first thought, with the young Senators star selling the contact perfectly.
On paper, this should be seen as a major advantage, but on social media, former NHLer Jason Demers was quick to call out Stutzle, telling him that with the reputation he's building up, it won't do him any favours, neither with opponents nor with the officials.
Over the past year or two, Stutzle has built a reputation for going down on any minor contact, and if former NHLers are taking note, it's only a matter of time until the officials and the league try to police it. Stutzle has incredible talent on the ice, and he could be the face of a rebuild in Ottawa, but until this type of action on the ice stops, this is how he'll be seen by everyone.
